High mast poles and lighting poles built for Indian conditions

A lighting pole is a deceptively simple product. It is a tube that holds a luminaire in the air — until you account for wind load at 30 metres, corrosion in a coastal atmosphere, the fatigue cycles imposed by decades of gusting, and the practical problem of servicing a fixture that sits above a live carriageway. Every one of those considerations shows up in the steel grade, the wall thickness, the base plate design and the galvanising specification.

What separates a good pole from a cheap one

The difference rarely shows on the day of installation. It shows five monsoons later. Three things determine whether a pole is still serviceable in year fifteen: the steel, the galvanising and the base detail.

  • Section and steel grade. High mast shafts are formed from steel plate, folded into polygonal sections and welded along a single longitudinal seam. The number of sides, the plate thickness and the taper are chosen against the design wind speed for the site — a coastal location in a high wind zone is not the same engineering problem as an inland industrial yard.
  • Hot dip galvanising. The single most consequential specification in the whole product. Zinc coating thickness determines service life in the field, and it is also the easiest place for a supplier to save money invisibly. A pole galvanised to a genuine specification, inside and out, will outlast a painted or thinly coated equivalent by decades.
  • Base plate and foundation bolts. The connection between shaft and foundation carries the entire overturning moment. Base plate thickness, stiffener arrangement and anchor bolt template accuracy are what stop a mast from developing a permanent lean.
  • Welding and inspection. Longitudinal seam welds on the shaft and the circumferential weld at the base plate are the fatigue-critical details. They deserve procedure-qualified welding and inspection, not visual acceptance.
  • Raising and lowering gear. For a high mast, the winch, wire ropes and the headframe assembly determine whether routine maintenance takes one technician an hour or a hired hydraulic platform and a road closure.

Applications

High mast lighting is chosen where a large area needs uniform illumination from a small number of mounting points — port container yards, railway marshalling areas, highway interchanges, toll plazas, airport aprons, industrial premises and sports grounds. The advantage over conventional pole lighting is not brightness but uniformity and obstruction: fewer structures in the operating area, fewer collisions, and fewer shadow pockets between poles.

Conventional street lighting poles remain the right answer for roads, where the geometry is linear and the mounting height needs to relate to the carriageway width. Here the specification questions are mounting height, arm length and tilt, spacing, and whether the pole doubles as a mounting point for signage, cameras or overhead cabling — each of which adds load that should be declared before the section is chosen rather than discovered afterwards.

Solar street lighting adds one further constraint. The panel presents a substantial sail area at the top of the pole, and the battery enclosure adds mass. A pole sized for a conventional luminaire is frequently under-specified once a panel is bolted to it — one of the more common causes of tilted or failed solar installations in the field.

What heights of high mast poles are available?

High masts are typically supplied in heights from around 12 to 40 metres, with the section design, plate thickness and foundation detail worked out against the height, the luminaire load and the design wind speed at the site.

Are the poles galvanised?

Hot dip galvanising is the standard corrosion protection for both high masts and street lighting poles. Coating thickness is specified against the intended service environment.

Do you supply the foundation hardware?

Base plates, anchor bolt assemblies and foundation templates are supplied with the poles so that the anchor bolt pattern set in concrete matches the mast base exactly.
